From the Desk of Kevin Richard

The first half of the year is complete and February vacation is right around the corner. KMS staff has begun to evaluate some of the initiatives we have put in place this year. Areas receiving high marks include our online grading program (Edline.net), technology integration, the RED (Read Every Day) program, and maintaining a clean and healthy environment.

If you haven’t done so, ask your student about their science fair project and their wiki site.  I have been following the progress of the students and I am quite impressed.  I look forward to seeing the end results on display. The science fair is a great example of technology integration in the classroom. Ask your child about what is going on in school!

A key component for these Middle School years is structure and supervision for students both in and out of school. As a parent or guardian it is important for you to communicate with other parents to provide safe opportunities for the children. This includes monitoring computer usage, movies and extra-curricular supervision. Our monthly dances offer a safe place for students to burn off their energy and socialize in a structured setting. Encourage your child to participate and have fun.  As much as the students feel as though they can be independent in all aspects of life, they need our patience, support and guidance. Weekends and evening times should be structured and supervised. Teaching your children good decision-making skills is very important. Remember, you are their parents/guardians now, friends later!!

With the start of the second half of the year comes an opportunity to reestablishing goals for your child. Work with your child to identify strengths that they may have and areas to be improved. Pick one or two things to work on for the next trimester. I look forward to the 8th grade trip to Washington, D.C., spring fling week, softball, baseball and track. We have a great group of students who are working very hard. Encouragement is the key to success.
